Our November dahlia meeting will be held Thursday, November 2nd at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. The topic of this meeting will be the proper digging, dividing, and storage of dahlia tubers. Society members will be set up at many work stations, giving hands-on demonstrations of tuber dividing.There will also be demonstrations showcasing various successful storage methods. This is one of our most popular meetings of the year and we expect a large turnout. As always, the meeting is free and open to the public. There will also be free door prizes and refreshments. We hope to see you there!

The October meeting of the Lane County Dahlia Society will be held Thursday, October 5th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. This month's program will center around dahlia hybridizing. A video, featuring our own Wayne Shantz, will demonstrate methods of pollination, how to gather dahlia seed, and how bees play a role in the creation of new dahlia varieties. Bring your questions as there is a lot to learn about this interesting subject.We will also have our last dahlia "Show-and-Tell" of the year. Please cut a bouquet or bring in few choice dahlia blooms from your garden. We all want to see what you are growing and loving this year. As always, there will be door prizes and refreshments and the meeting is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

Admission is Free! Come help the Lane County Dahlia Society celebrate its 54th Annual Show. There will be hundreds of dahlia varieties on display, exhibited by dozens of growers from all over the Pacific Northwest. There will be an information booth staffed by LCDS members ready to answer all of your questions and free handouts too. Just outside the Wheeler Pavilion is a dahlia garden tended by LCDS members. Bring you camera and your questions and prepare to be amazed at the display. We will see you there!

The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its September meeting on Thursday, September 7th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. This month's meeting will focus on how to enter a dahlia bloom into a dahlia show. We will discuss how to improve bloom quality on your plants, how to safely transport blooms to the show, and demonstrate how to stage a 1-bloom and 3-bloom entry. We will also have a demonstration on how to create a show design and will hear how to gather all of the materials that you will need. Limited amounts of floral foam will be for sale. We also encourage all members to bring some dahlia blooms for our "show-and-tell". The meeting is free and open to the public. Free refreshments and door prizes will be provided. The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its August meeting on Thursday, August 3rd at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. The presentation for this month will be focused on dahlia virus. Linda Taylor, a member of the Portland Dahlia Society and a member of the American Dahlia Society's Dahlia Virus Committee will be our honored guest and speaker. She will help us understand what dahlia virus is, what is currently know about them and what we don't yet know. She will give tips on identifying dahlias with a virus verses plants that might just be suffering from a nutrient deficiency or other factor. Most importantly, she will give tips on preventing the spread of virus and let us know what we can do proactively in our own gardens. We will also have our Dahlia "Show-and-Tell" table set up. Please bring samples of what's blooming in your garden to be enjoyed by the group! We will have door prizes and refreshments. The meeting is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its July meeting on Thursday, July 6th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. By this time, most have us have finished planting our dahlia tubers and our plants are up and growing. This month's program will focus on "what's next." - all of the tasks related to growing healthy plants and beautiful blooms. We will discuss topping off plants, dis-budding, pest control, and fertilizing. Please bring your questions as Deb, Lexa, and Camille will try their best to answer them. We also encourage all members to bring some early season dahlia blooms for our "show-and-tell" if your dahlias have begun to bloom. The meeting is free and open to the public. As most of you know by now, the LCDS lost our dear friend, mentor, and Vice-President Michael Canning suddenly back on May 14th. This Saturday a Celebration of Life will be held for Michael at the McDonald Theater, 1010 Willamette Street, in Eugene. The service will be from 2-5 PM and parking is available at the nearby Overpark Parking Garage, 10th & Oak. It will be a special time for anyone who knew and loved Michael, with friends and family gathering. We hope many of you can make it.

The June meeting of the Lane County Dahlia Society will be held Thursday, June 1st at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center. Our presentation this month will be lead by veteran L.C.D.S. grower Brian Fullerton, who will discuss getting water to our dahlia plants as the weather warms up and the dry season begins. Learn about different watering systems as well as theories about how much and when to water. Bring your questions! We will also have a last chance tuber sale. It will start at 7:00 PM and continue on during the refreshment break. All tubers will be just $1.The evening will also include some time to share remembrances of our late L.C.D.S. member Michael Canning, who unexpectedly passed away on May 14th. Michael was such a key part of our L.C.D.S. family and a true friend and mentor to all. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Cheryle Hawkins and his Mother Shirley Canning.There will be door prizes and free refreshments also available. The meeting is free and open to the public. Saturday, May 20th will be the last tuber sale of the year held by the Lane County Dahlia Society. The sale will take place from 10 AM until 4 PM and will be located at the Key Bank on River Road. The address is 1980 River Road. Key Bank is located right in front of the Bi-Mart, just south of the Beltline Expressway. Please come early for the best selection. We have 100's of varieties for sales in a wide assortment of forms, sizes and colors. With the sun finally out and the outside temperature warming, now is the perfect time to plant! The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its May meeting Thursday, May 4th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. At this month's meeting a pair of experienced dahlia growers will be on hand to discuss preparation methods for planting a dahlia garden. They will offer advice on when, where, and how to plant your dahlia tubers and will gladly answer any questions. We will also have a limited selection of dahlia tubers for sale at the meeting. All tubers will sell for $3.50 each. Tuber sales begin at 7:00 PM. There will be door prizes and free refreshments available.The meetings are free and open to the public. Time: The auction will start at 7:30 PM sharp, to be followed by open sales tables approx. 1 hour later
What: Choice dahlia tubers will be auctioned off and sold to support the activities of the Lane County Dahlia Society. The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its March meeting Thursday, March 2nd at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. The March meeting will debut a brand new program titled "Dahlia Varieties 101 - What are the right dahlias for your garden?". Written and presented By Lexa C. and Michael C., this presentation is aimed at both Novice dahlia growers and long-time dahlia growers alike. They will give dahlia variety suggestions for both exhibitors and home gardeners. Topics include the best varieties for cut flowers, new exhibition stand-outs, dahlias for the garden border, and unusual dahlia varieties.This power-point presentation is chock full of photos and will be sure to inspire all dahlia lovers for the upcoming season. There will also be door prizes and free refreshments available.The meeting is free and open to the public. January is the time to renew your dahlia society membership and pay yearly dues to help sustain our organization. If you joined the Lane County Dahlia Society after September 1st, 2016, then your dues are good through 2017. We encourage all members to join the American Dahlia Society and the Pacific Northwest Dahlia Conference as well.
American Dahlia Society $24 per person, $27 for a family. Members receive the quarterly ADS Bulletin and the 2010 Classification Guild. The Bulletin contains timely articles pertaining to dahlias, information on new cultivars, and a host of other topics. The Classification book is indispensable as a guide that states which cultivars performed well in your region and lists winning varieties from around the nation. The ADS provides a great service to all dahlia enthusiasts at a bargain price.
Pacific Northwest Dahlia Conference $10 per person or $15 for a family. The PNDS hosts 3 trial gardens: Inland Empire Garden in Spokane, Canby Trial Garden in Canby, Oregon & the Victoria Trial Garden on Canada's Vancouver Island. The PNDS provides training for judges, maintains records for all member societies, and sponsors an annual show. Each member of the PNDS receives 3 newsletters a year, a membership booklet, and an exhibiting number.
